Discovering Redlands’ Mid-Century architecture is the theme of this year’s Historic Preservation Fortnight. Plan on attending any or all of the following events.

Monday, May 9th: Opening Fortnight Reception – 6 p.m. at the future home of the Redlands Historical Museum, 700 Brookside Avenue. Meet the Club 125’s Class of 1891 – new inductees into the Club 125 recognizing structures that are 125 years of age or older. Recognition of the Redlands Conservancy’s Adaptive Reuse Award. Wednesday, May 11th: Redlands Forum Program – 5:30 p.m. at the ESRI auditorium. Nathan Gonzales, head curator of the Heritage Room of the A.K. Smiley Public Library, speaker: Redlands: Post-War Optimism, Community and Architecture. Register via www.esri.com

Thursday, May 12th: Historic Preservation Seminar – 3 p.m. at SRI at 21 W. Stuart Avenue. Discussion of the developmental history of Redlands, Redlands’ architectural history, and the role of the Historic & Scenic Preservation Commission and conforming with the Secretary of Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation. Free and open to the public.

Saturday, May 14: Historic Preservation Faire – 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the A.K. Smiley Public Library and Smiley Park, 125 W. Vine Street. The event will include various speakers discussing Redlands historic architecture, choosing period appropriate appliances, new requirements of the California Green Code. Local contractors, businesses and groups will demonstrate restoration techniques, mid-century goods and displays in Smiley Park. All events are free and open to the public.

Wednesday, May 18: Sock Hop at Starbucks – 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Roll up your sleeves, take off your shoes, put on your poodle skirt and swing to some classic 50’s inspired music at the newly opened Starbucks store at 625 E. Redlands Boulevard. The event is free and open to all.

Saturday, May 21st: Mid-Century Walk Through Redlands – 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This 5K walk will start at the Fox Theater building at 123 Cajon Street. Participants will be given a guidebook for this unescorted event.  Register at EventBrite.com.
